What are the best exercises to burn tummy fat?

You will probably see many TikTok videos, Instagram reels, or Pinterest posts on how to burn fat from your tummy.

Let me start by saying tummy fat can not be burnt off from a specific area of your body, you lose body fat as a whole, and you may as an individual notice it in certain places when you do start to see fat loss results or if you see a gain.

If you want to see fat loss results you need to first be in a calorie deficit for some time, and you need to increase your daily movement. Hence, you are more active which will increase your total energy expenditure. You need to incorporate some form of exercise regularly throughout your week, ideally strength training for one-two of those sessions.

No amount of situps, crunches, bird dogs, or bicycles will magically melt the fat away.

If you find yourself doing the above exercises to "burn more fat" then my advice is to stop and learn the fundamentals of how you achieve fat loss sustainably, without a fad diet, without restrictions, and without 2 hours of cross trainer and ab workouts daily.

The steps you need to take are:

  1. Determine what your WHY is, why are you striving for fat loss, why you want to achieve it, and why is it important to you.

  2. Work out your calorie deficit, how long you will need to be in one, how many calories you'll need to consume to achieve your goal, and to see a loss of 400-500g per week.

  3. Start an exercise routine, with at least 2-3 strength sessions included, building lean muscle over time will increase your BMR! Basal Metabolic Rate.

  4. Increase your daily activity/movement to increase your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) you can track this using a step counter to see how active you are daily through step counts approx/to stairs climbed etc.

  5. Get 7 hours of sleep every night (where possible sometimes I know you, mothers, out there will find this one hard when the babies are young, it's okay though you will get there!)

  6. Be consistent with it all and don't give up, if you don't give up you won't fail!

I will be honest it seems like a lot of work, and for some, it might seem like too much, but at the end of the day if you want to achieve fat loss and you want to be healthier overall you need to make a few little lifestyle changes to help you get there. It is 100% possible you just need to keep going and NOT LET SELF-DOUBT get in your way of obtaining the healthy, confident, strong body that you are working hard for every day.

Being unhealthy, not very mobile, low in energy and sluggish all the time is HARD, and so can all the above, you just need to pick your HARD.

I know you can do it, you just need to try your best and keep showing up for yourself in some form every day, even if you just start with one first and maintain that for a while, its all a step in the right direction to help you achieve your goals.

Health, strength, and happiness always
