Discovering the Magic of Ceremonial Cacao: A Journey of Self-Love and Connection

Updated: Aug 28

In a world where negative self-beliefs and body image issues are prevalent, finding a path to self-love and connection can be transformative. For me, ceremonial cacao has been a powerful ally on this journey. This ancient plant medicine, revered for centuries by indigenous cultures, has provided a gentle yet profound way to heal, connect, and embrace my true self.

I never truly felt connection to anything spiritual , and as a human I feel as though it is an important need to help us to connect more with our true selves. I went to a Catholic school and to be honest (and I don't mean to offend anyone here) it just wasn't for me. I liked the idea of a spiritual connection just not how the Catholic Church portrayed it to be.

When I found cacao, I would first use it in powdered form and pop it into my smoothies, at first this was a way for me to boost my magnesium and also give my smoothies a yummy healthy chocolate boost.

But then I tried it ceremonial form, first at my fave plant based cafe in Auckland, and I was hooked! Now I use this very special drink as a way to have a moment with myself. I will make my cacao and either write in my journal, or pull some cards to help myself with relating back to me and what I truly want and need.

I am so excited to bring this ritual , which is not just a ritual for me but so many others around the world, to my event in July! If you've had it before I am sure this will excite you to receive, and if you have not them I am excited for you to try this for the very first time.

What is Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial cacao is more than just a delicious beverage; it is a sacred plant medicine that has been used in rituals and ceremonies for thousands of years, particularly by the Mayan and Aztec civilizations. Unlike commercial chocolate, which is often highly processed and stripped of its natural benefits, ceremonial cacao is made from pure, un roasted cacao beans. It is minimally processed to retain its rich nutritional profile and energetic properties.

Ceremonial cacao is known for its heart-opening qualities, making it a perfect companion for personal rituals, meditation, and self-reflection. Its natural compounds, such as theobromine, magnesium, and antioxidants, work synergistically to enhance mood, increase focus, and promote a sense of well-being.

(This is my favourite part of being able to enjoy this incredible beverage)

My Personal Journey with Ceremonial Cacao

As I have mentioned before, before discovering ceremonial cacao, I struggled with negative beliefs about myself and my body. These thoughts were deeply ingrained, affecting my confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life. I often felt disconnected from my true self, battling a constant internal dialogue of self-criticism and doubt.

When I first heard about ceremonial cacao, I was intrigued but skeptical (as we all are these days with the internet). However, I decided to give it a try, hoping it might offer some relief from my negative self-talk. My first proper experience with cacao (as a ritual) was during a guided ceremony, where I learned to prepare the cacao with intention and gratitude. As I sipped the rich, velvety drink, I felt a warmth spread through my body, gradually easing the tension and negativity I had been carrying.

How Ceremonial Cacao Helped Me

  1. Heart-Opening and Emotional Release: Ceremonial cacao has a unique ability to open the heart, making it easier to access and release suppressed emotions. During my cacao ceremonies, I found myself able to confront and process feelings I had long ignored. This emotional release was both cathartic and healing, allowing me to let go of the negative beliefs I held about myself.

  2. Enhanced Meditation and Self-Reflection: The gentle stimulation from cacao helped me achieve a deeper state of meditation and self-reflection. In these meditative states, I gained insights into the origins of my self-critical thoughts and began to reframe them with compassion and understanding. This newfound clarity was crucial in building a more positive self-image.

  3. Connection to Self and Nature: Ceremonial cacao helped me reconnect with myself and the natural world. The ritual of preparing and drinking cacao became a sacred practice, a time to honour my body and spirit. This connection fostered a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the body I had once criticised so harshly.

  4. Empowerment and Self-Love: Over time, the regular practice of cacao ceremonies empowered me to cultivate self-love and acceptance. The cacao ceremonies became a ritual of self-care, reminding me to honour my journey and celebrate my progress. I learned to appreciate my body's strength and resilience, shifting my focus from criticism to gratitude.

Heres my Cacao Recipe:

The best way to make your cacao is in a pot on the stove, it takes a 5-10 minutes, but it is made with love and tastes so much creamier.

  1. In a pot put your desired serving of cacao (I use the recommended serving on the package)

  2. Add 1 cup (the cup you are drinking from) of rice milk

  3. 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

  4. 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey

  5. Combine your ingredients and keep stirring until the cacao has melted completely.

  6. Serve in your favourite cacao cup/mug and dont forget to set those intentions with a deep delicious inhale and exhale before you take your first sip.
